Epidural Injections

An epidural injection is a procedure in which medication, typically a combination of a steroid and a pain reliever, is administered into the space around the spinal cord, called the epidural space. This area surrounds the spinal nerves and can become inflamed or compressed due to conditions like intervertebral disc disease or lumbosacral disease. By delivering medication directly to this area, we can help reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and improve mobility more effectively than oral medications alone in some cases.

Epidural injections are only performed after an MRI has provided a clear diagnosis, allowing us to target the treatment accurately and safely. Epidural injections can be especially helpful for pets experiencing significant lower back pain or difficulty walking with the back limbs. The procedure is performed under sedation or anesthesia to ensure your pet’s comfort and safety. While it is not the right option for every patient, an epidural can be a valuable, minimally invasive tool to manage spinal pain and improve quality of life when surgery isn’t an option.
