Codeine

Codeine is an oral opioid pain medication commonly prescribed for dogs. It works by blocking pain signals from reaching the brain, helping your pet feel more comfortable.

Codeine is typically used for short-term or acute pain rather than for long-term conditions. It may be prescribed as a single-ingredient medication or in combination with other drugs, such as acetaminophen.

Because codeine is an opioid, it is classified as a controlled substance. This means it is tightly regulated and can only be prescribed by a veterinarian with a DEA license.

Dosing

Codeine has a short half-life, meaning it does not stay in the body for long. For effective pain relief, most dogs need to receive it three to four times daily. Always follow your veterinarian’s specific instructions.

Possible Side Effects

Most dogs tolerate codeine well, and side effects are usually mild:

  • Drowsiness or mild slowing of breathing: These typically resolve once the medication is stopped.
  • Constipation: With ongoing use, constipation may occur. Adding extra fiber to the diet (such as unflavored Metamucil or canned pumpkin) can help manage this side effect.
