Trazodone is a serotonin modulator used to reduce anxiety and promote calmness in dogs, most commonly during cage confinement after surgery or injury. It can also be used for pets experiencing stress during travel, veterinary visits, fireworks or thunderstorms. Trazodone can also be used long-term for dogs with generalized anxiety.
Dosing
Trazodone can be given as needed, up to every 8 hours to keep your pet calm. Dogs’ sensitivity can vary, so your veterinarian may adjust the dose if the initial amount is not effective. The medication typically takes effect within 60 minutes after oral administration.
Possible Side Effects
- Sedation and incoordination:Â Usually mild and dose-dependent.
- Hyperexcitability:Â Rarely, the opposite effect may occur, and your dog may become hyperactive. In these cases, your veterinarian may recommend switching to a different sedative medication.
Additional Information
Serotonin syndrome is poorly documented in dogs but may occur when trazodone is combined with other serotonin-enhancing medications (such as Fluoxetine, Clomipramine, or Selegiline). If your neurologist is concerned, they will discuss this risk with you before starting the medication.
