Gabapentin (Neurontin)

Gabapentin is a well-tolerated pain medication commonly used to manage pain in dogs and cats. In cats, it can also be prescribed as an anxiolytic, helping reduce fear and stress associated with handling and veterinary visits. It has also been used off-label as an anti-seizure medication with unproven success.

Overall, gabapentin is considered very safe, even for long-term or lifelong use when needed. Gabapentin is absorbed well after oral administration and is eliminated primarily by the kidneys.

Dosing

Gabapentin is typically given three times daily, as its effects usually last about eight hours. Some pets, however, may do well with once- or twice-daily dosing.

This medication has a wide margin of safety, so dosing can vary significantly depending on your pet’s individual needs.

Possible Side Effects

Gabapentin is very safe, and most side effects resolve with dose adjustment or discontinuation:

  • Mild sedation: more likely at higher doses or if combined with other sedating medications.
  • Mild incoordination: more likely at higher doses or if combined with other sedating medications.
  • Gastrointestinal upset: Vomiting or diarrhea can very rarely be seen.

Additional information

Some liquid gabapentin formulations from human pharmacies may contain xylitol, which is toxic to pets. Always ensure your pet’s medication is xylitol-free.
