Clorazepate is an oral benzodiazepine used as a short-term rescue medication to help manage cluster seizures. Because the body can develop tolerance if this drug is used daily for long periods, it is important not to overuse it. This is not as strong as midazolam but has a longer duration of action.
Dosing
Give the first dose once your pet is fully awake and able to safely swallow medication after a seizure. Continue giving clorazepate every 8 hours for 2–3 days as directed by your neurologist. If your pet still has seizures after 3 days of treatment, or requires the medication for longer, your neurologist may recommend adjusting the rescue plan.
Possible Side Effects
Side effects only occur while your pet is receiving the medication:
- Sedation or wobbliness:Â If these are excessive, skip the next dose and call Neuro Vet to discuss lowering the dose.
- Paradoxical stimulation:Â Rarely, some pets may show agitation, restlessness, vocalization, or excitement instead of sedation.
